The following documentation describes a reimagining of Starcraft's setting and races.
Krysilliant, the primary sector of Cosmonarchy's stories, is home to vast empires and a staggering number of star systems. With this environment acting as a strong foundation for both high-scale RTS gameplay and competent, compatible narratives, the saga of Krysilliant will be that of a bold trailblazer, achieving what no other RTS content has accomplished thus far.
Goals:
- Facilitate large-scale RTS missions while maintaining coherency
- Display a pantheon of multi-faceted factions that can all be explored in due time
- Present "exotic" premises, race pairings, and faction identities without shattering immersion
Campaigns
Currently-announced campaigns set in Krysilliant are:
- Tutorials
- To Touch the Sun, an introductory campaign, by Pr0nogo
- Reign of Sand, a standard campaign, by Pr0nogo
- Day of Blood, a short campaign, by Pr0nogo
Setting
Key concepts:
- There are no references to the original storyline, and the timeline is ambiguously removed from that of the original content, removing many of the limitations imposed by the source material.
- The local sector, Krysilliant, is both distinct from and physically far removed from Koprulu, where the original storyline took place.
- The sector is home to a diaspora of Terran factions, and a smaller menagerie of Protoss factions.
- Zerg maintain position on the border of Krysilliant and a neighboring sector of Tharitor, which has recently been overrun by the swarming race.
- Two of the most sizable factions, the Orion Imperium (Terran) and the Divine Primacy (Protoss), control the majority of space within the sector.
- The smaller factions are often seen contesting one another in isolated regions, or making incursions against the less-fortified outer systems.
- Newly-arrived Askosi scatterguards have been sighted in Krysilliant's outer rim. They do not have significant presence within the sector as of yet.
- There are unconfirmed reports of novel pathogens ripping through Tharitor, perhaps explaining the animus behind the Zerg invasion.
Races
Terran:
- The industrious, expansionist, descendants of mankind.
- A people as eclectic as they are ambitious.
- Divided by their myriad beliefs, united by their forward momentum.
- A collective wisdom that has yet to catch up to their formidable technology.
- Expansionist and self-affirmed, almost always certain of their righteousness.
- A proud warrior society of enlightened beings, having solved many of the petty problems that plague lesser races.
- Their best and brightest are pursuant of individual greatness, on behalf of the greater whole.
- Nearly all Protoss are adherents to their culture, with unending respect for legendary individuals.
- Noncombatants assist the war effort with science, engineering, and art.
- Lower population relative to other races, requiring supplementation with automatons.
- Masters of incredibly powerful technology... that they fear and revile when used in direct combat.
- Species-wide goal of ascending as part of "The Commencement", a grand vision that will see the Protoss become the caretakers of the universe.
- A force of nature that cannot be reasoned with.
- An endgame unclear to all, apparently acting instinctually.
- Individual swarms are called hive organs, and belong to enormous collections called tendrils.
- In the absence of a control node, organs continue their most recent tasks, but fail to adapt to new threats.
- Ferocious reptilian hominids, paying the price for a grave mistake.
- In a war over the future of their civilization, their homeworld was utterly destroyed.
- Every Askosi boasts cybernetic implants, achieving better communication and superhuman capabilities.
- At their best when working together, utilizing their cybernetics to make construction and relocation easier and faster.
- Having gone through a great scattering, the various factions are almost always hostile to each other on-sight.
- Tentative alliances with Terrans and Protoss are possible, while fighting side-by-side with Zerg is much less common.
Factions
Terran:
- With several superpowers within the sector, proxy wars are commonplace, but direct conflict is rare.
- Numerous smaller factions hold dominion over individual star systems. The Orion Imperium reigns supreme, but not unchallenged.
- Orion Imperium (melee techtree)
- Colors: Oranges, browns
- The de facto faction in the sector, though not without their rivals.
- Strong believers of manifest destiny, and that any land they can take should rightfully be theirs.
- Unmatched population count and standing armies that dwarf all Terran competition.
- Liberal users of propaganda and military peacekeeping to help manage at scale.
- Hecaton Coalition
- Colors: Greens
- Evacuees displaced from a nearby sector by the Orkoti and Imicren Tendrils.
- A once-powerful military, with previously closed-borders.
- Generally distrustful of other Terrans.
- Futurist Federation
- Colors: Blues
- Reliant on superior strategy and technology in order to maintain their waning power in the sector.
- Recently opened negotiations with local Terran powers to sell their innovations for much-needed resources.
- Eager to trade with neutral factions, and even more eager to forge new alliances.
- Exceedingly competent leadership, with interplay between disciplines that isn't always the best.
- Golden Republic
- Colors: Yellows
- The most recent power to take precedence in the sector.
- Frequently aligned with the Starbound and other Protoss, sharing resources in exchange for technology and intelligence.
- Aspire to ascend as the Protoss have, prioritizing psionic studies and favoring reserved approaches to warfare.
- Lower in population compared to the local Terran superpowers, yet growing quickly as their message takes hold.
- Nydus Trinity
- Colors: Purples
- Worshipers of the Zerg Swarm, seeking some form of rapture via infestation.
- Thoroughly reviled and distrusted by other Terrans.
- Often seen luring Terrans and Protoss into traps, presenting such offerings to nearby swarms.
- Make ample use of agents within other Terran factions to keep track of potential prey.
- Upstarts
- Colors: Assorted
- A catch-all term for insurrectionists, pirates, guerilla militaries, and nascent nations.
- Hit-and-run tactics characterize their unlikely goal of challenging greater powers.
- Scrappy and aggressive, often forced to make do with outdated or ramshackle technology.
Protoss:
- Though nearly all Protoss are aligned in the goal of shaping the universe, there are many factions with different ideas of how to achieve supremacy.
- Those few who find fundamental umbrage with the intended journey are almost universally reviled, only finding asylum in the midst of other races.
- Divine Primacy (melee techtree)
- Colors: Teals, bright achromatics
- The primary Protoss faction; holds the vast majority of territories.
- Fleets of such magnitude, their vessels dwarf even the population of any splinter faction.
- The scale of their dominion makes maintenance a daunting task.
- Numerous reconnaissance divisions scattered throughout inhabited systems.
- Order of the Sacred Saber
- Colors: Blues, Bright achromatics
- Extreme believers of the sacred nature of Protoss life.
- Rely on automatons and profane technology to conserve Protoss lives.
- More likely to agree to trade with other factions or races.
- Khalendric Knights
- Colors: Yellows
- A more fanatical subset of Protoss that do not respect the sovereignty of other races.
- At odds with the Primacy, disagreeing over how aggressive the Protoss creed should be spread.
- Significantly smaller than the Primacy's armies, but still markedly dangerous due to their deathless zeal.
- Quick to provoke fights, particularly against those they deem weaker.
- Consider those scant Protoss that do battle against them to be necessary casualties.
- Starbound
- Colors: Dark blues, dark achromatics
- A lowly and disjointed collective, primarily composed of exiles from the Primacy.
- Because of low numbers and lack of external support, they rely on allegiances with other races and factions.
- Out of necessity, they have no compunctions against using profane technology, or utilizing sorrowful tactics.
Zerg:
- Veritable oceans of Zerg lurk at the sector's outskirts, rarely seeking war within the various systems.
- Sightings have increased near Orion border worlds, implying a probing formation or a deliberate lure.
- Ataltreth Tendril (melee techtree)
- Colors: Purples, Reds
- A primordial tendril with tried-and-true methods of assault.
- Imicren Tendril
- Colors: Yellows, oranges
- One of the smallest tendrils ever catalogued, clocking in at only a few trillion agents.
- Its organs make liberal use of assimilation tactics to keep the frontlines well-staffed.
- Weakened after a prolonged but victorious war against the Hecaton Coalition, and a run-in with the Orkoti Tendril.
- Goszirith Tendril
- Colors: Dark achromatics
- An immense, ravenous tendril that leverages its sheer numbers to reign supreme.
- Orkoti Tendril
- Colors: Teals, bright achromatics
- A tendril with a predilection for siege warfare and extended battles.
- Their brief involvement in the Hecaton-Imicren conflict saw both sides cut down to size.
- Zorthos Tendril
- Colors: Browns, oranges
- A tendril of middling size, known for its expansionist tendencies and preference for area denial.
Askosi:
- Across the vastness of space, throngs of Askosi lie scattered, ready to unite along familial lines in times of need.
- These recent arrivals into Krysilliant space have set the borders ablaze with equal parts anxiety and curiosity.
- Inoa Scatterguard (melee techtree)
- Colors: Greens, blues
- The largest collection of organized Askosi operating in and around Krysilliant.
- While not the first Askosi to discover the sector, they are the most threatening to the other powers.
- Publicly-declared motivations focus on resource harvesting, information gathering, and potential trade.
- Privately, the Inoa Coven is assessing whether true dominion over the sector could be possible, in part or in full.
